It is estimated that there are over 3000 new cases of occupational asthma each year.  Conservative estimates suggest that at least one in every ten cases of adult onset asthma is work related.

Many asthma sufferers are also affected by rhinitis which can also be work related.

Symptoms of asthma

Symptoms of asthma can include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness.

Symptoms of rhinitis

Rhinitis produces “cold-like” symptoms such as sneezing, itchiness, and a  blocked or dripping nose. Complications of the condition include middle ear infections, nasal polyps and sinusitis. 

It is caused by the immune system reacting to the “allergen” by producing chemicals (including histamine) which result in the mucous membranes becoming swollen and producing excessive amounts of mucous. 

Compensation and benefits

Compensation is payable for occupational asthma and for rhinitis.

Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit may also be payable if the exposure has been in a “prescribed” industry.
