Some of the main industries/jobs which can involve exposure to sensitisers and/or allergens.

Industry / Job

Allergens / Sensitisers

Agricultural workers

Chemicals, grain dusts, plan dusts, soil, fungal spores, poultry dust, animal bedding, animal dander (dead skin flakes) and animal feed

Animal workers

Livestock and poultry workers, slaughter house workers, boarding kennel workers, dog groomers, vets

Rosin-based flux fumes

Welders

Woodworking

Hardwood, softwood and wood composite dusts

Allergic occupational asthma

This is the most common type of occupational asthma.  Alergens or sensitisers in the workplace can cause irritation to the airways so that they become hypersensitive.

Irritant-induced occupational asthma

An example is asthma caused by inhaling fumes from a chemical leak.

Work aggravated asthma

Non-occupational asthma may be made worse after exposures in the workplace such as certain dusts or fumes.

Allergic occupational rhinitis

This can develop after exposure to allergens in the workplace.
