Closing the gender pay gap
We all know that the UK often follows US social trends. So a new piece of US legislation might just make its way over here. New York, New Orleans, Oregon and Puerto Rico have recently banned the job interview question “What is your current salary?’ Massachusetts and San Francisco are to follow suit shortly.
Because women still only earn around 83% of a man’s salary, revealing a current salary at interview may allow employers to pigeon-hole women into a lower salary bracket. However, the question is always navigable with something like “What do you hope to make in your next role?” – so do your research, find out what the role is worth and value yourself realistically.
